Groundworks and Foundation Works in Bristol

Our Formwork Company Discusses
Falsework and Formwork

In commercial and industrial construction, formwork and falsework are often used interchangeably. Still, they refer to different aspects of the construction process, which we’ll explain in further detail in this article.

As a professional formwork company in Bristol, DJ Reinforcements specialises in both, as well as concrete reinforcements, drainage repairs, foundation works, and groundworks for commercial projects in the southwest.

Our team has over a quarter of a century of experience in the construction industry, establishing our now highly regarded company in 2021. Together with our professional subcontractors, we offer these services to ensure the durability and longevity of your planned structures.

Formwork

Formwork plays a crucial role in shaping concrete in construction. It refers to temporary or permanent moulds that hold freshly poured concrete in place until it hardens and gains sufficient strength. Essential for creating various structural elements such as beams, columns, slabs, and walls, formwork ensures the concrete attains the desired shape, dimensions, and surface finish.

Falsework

Conversely, falsework is a temporary structure that plays a vital role in supporting and stabilising a permanent structure during its construction or until it becomes self-supporting. This includes scaffolding, shoring and bracing systems designed to bear the loads of freshly poured concrete or other materials. This construction method ensures safety and stability, especially for complex or large-scale projects like bridges and high-rise buildings.

Key Differences

The differences between formwork and falsework can be summarised as follows:

  • Formwork: Moulds to shape concrete or similar materials used for casting structural elements such as columns, slabs and walls
  • Falsework: Temporary structures to support a permanent structure until it can support itself, i.e. bridges or large spans

Both methods use similar materials like timber, steel and aluminium, but, as you can see, their design and application differ.

In addition to these crucial aspects of any large-scale construction project, whether in Bristol or the surrounding areas covered by our formwork company, DJ Reinforcements also provides the following services for commercial and industrial clients:

  • Concrete Reinforcements
  • Drainage Repairs
  • Foundation Works
  • Groundworks

Working Together

Formwork and falsework often work together in construction projects. For instance, when building a bridge, falsework might be erected to support the bridge deck while formwork moulds the concrete into the desired shape. Once the concrete has set and gained sufficient strength, the falsework can be removed, leaving the completed structure supported by its own strength.

They are both vital to modern construction, each playing a distinct role in ensuring structures are built accurately and safely. Formwork focuses on shaping concrete, while falsework provides the necessary support during a build. Understanding their differences and how they complement each other is crucial for effective construction management.
